Teaching Policies

      Lessons —

Length/type--Private lessons are offered on a weekly basis and are available in 30, 45 or 60 minutes segments, depending on each student’s goals.  Voice, piano, and organ lessons are available.

Practice expectations for piano students--A student’s progress relates directly to the amount of time spent in disciplined practice.  Early elementary piano students should practice a minimum of 15-20 minutes per day.  Middle and later elementary students should be able to do 20-30 minutes per day.

Practice expectations for voice students--Elementary voice students should practice 15-20 minutes each day.  Middle school and secondary level voice students should practice a minimum of 20-30 minutes daily for optimal progress.

Homework expectations--Theory, ear training and note recognition/sight reading workbook assignments are to be completed at home prior to each lesson.

Studio manners--Compassion, respect and appreciation for every individual provide the fundamental pillars for the interpersonal climate of the studio.  Good manners and civil courtesy will be demonstrated and reciprocated.  Hats are not to be worn inside the studio. Chewing gum and food should be left outside the studio.

Waiting and visitors--Parents or caregivers accompanying students may wait in the studio.  Students may bring guests to lessons if advance notice is given. Because of space limitations, a limit of one visitor per lesson is permitted.

Attendance--The time scheduled for each student’s lesson is reserved for that student.  Please arrive on time; be considerate of other students and recognize that time will not be taken from succeeding lessons for late arrivals.

Make up Lessons--Make up lessons will be considered case by case on a negotiated, as available basis.

      Tuition and payment policy —

The fee structure takes into account the mandatory New Mexico State Gross Receipts Tax, which is currently assessed at the rate of 7 percent.

Tuition for regular lessons is due at the first of the month, but may be paid weekly   Please note that discounts are available for prompt, timely payment.  No refund, credit or make up lesson will be arranged when a lesson is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.  Cash or checks are accepted.  Statements are issued only in cases of miscalculation or by special arrangement for unusual circumstances.  A $25 charge will be assessed for all returned checks!

Tuition includes lessons, recitals and administrative costs.  Costs for musical materials are separate.

Required musical activities and events--All students are expected to participate in a minimum of two musical activities per year in addition to lessons or to negotiate other arrangements.  These may include studio recitals or school performances or other community performance activity.

Optional Musical Activities--Attendance at performance events around Albuquerque (such as New Mexico Symphony Concerts or other events advertised on KUNM or KHFM) may be substituted for a community performance under specific circumstances.

Missed Lessons--To bring studio policy into line with the policies of other studios in Albuquerque, lessons missed will be made up only if the lesson is cancelled twenty-four hours or more before the scheduled appointment.  With respect to lessons that must be rearranged because of known school conflicts, each situation will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.  For months that include studio vacation days, tuition will be prorated according to number of lessons available.

Materials fees--In general, the most convenient arrangement is for music to be obtained by the teacher for the student.  In each case, the student will be billed at the teacher’s cost (face price plus tax as charged by retailer).

Cancellation of participation--If you find it necessary to discontinue study, advance notice of one month is expected.
